Jilliene's ongoing exploration of the haunting, unsettled image of the canoe began with researching Peter Doig's Echo Lake and Canoe Lake series of paintings and prints which he based on the final scene from the classic horror film Friday the 13th, a film which opened up Jilliene's love of the horror genre in film from a young age. Now drawing after Doig, repeatedly from memory, and from appropriated canoes in museums (such as the Pitt Rivers Museum, Oxford) Jilliene explores the dark psychology of the individual but also unveiling imperialist aspects to this ubiquitous Canadian symbol.
